TIMELINE
Jan - Feb 2023 (3 weeks)

Modern wearables and devices capture an incredible volume of data daily. Yet most of our health data remains underutilized, providing only historical insights rather than proactive guidance.

Simulaneously, healthcare costs continue to rise. Many care systems still focus on reactive treatments, intervening only when issues have escalated.

We saw a chance to leverage the popularity of IoT devices and emerging AI capabilities to incentivize preventive behavior. By turning a user’s step count or sleep quality into actionable guidance and financial perks, we could tackle two critical pain points: high medical costs and low patient engagement in preventive care.

Setting the Stage

Key Question

What Current Solutions Miss

Despite widespread tracking tools, users are left with raw numbers, no context, little guidance, and minimal motivation.

Understanding our Stakeholders

We spoke to patients, insurers, and providers to understand their pain points and priorities:

PATIENTS
Lower premiums and actionable health nudges encourage engagement and better health outcomes.

INSURERS
Healthier patients drive fewer expensive hospital bills, cutting high-cost claims and lowering insurer expenses long-term.

PROVIDERS
Streamlined patient data drives fewer routine consults, reducing unnecessary interventions and freeing providers to focus on urgent telehealth care.

Aeglia: An AI health agent driving preventive care through smart nudges & incentives

By proactively interpreting a user’s data, Aeglia can step in at just the right moment, making health guidance more practical and motivating.

Why an AI agent?

Analyzes trends and data holistically, flagging potential issues before they become bigger health risks

IDENTIFY PATTERNS EARLY

Provides timely, context-aware prompts (ex: “You’ve been inactive for two hours. Earn 2 points by doing a quick stretch?”)

PERSONALIZED PROMPTS

Instantly translates positive behavior into tangible benefits such as premium discounts or partner perks, making preventive care feel actionable and rewarding

CLOSE THE LOOP WITH REWARDS

Daily Touchpoints

We moved beyond an “app-only” model to create a flexible ecosystem where Aeglia integrates into daily touchpoints:

WEARABLES

Deliver quick nudges and heart-rate alerts at a glance

MOBILE APP

A lightweight companion app for quick meal logging

VOICE ASSISTANTS

Enable hands-free health check-ins and daily status updates

Seamless nutrition tracking

Aeglia makes meal logging simple and accurate through two intuitive options:

Users log meals with a voice command through their wearable or smart speaker (ex: “Aeglia, log my lunch. I had a turkey and cheddar sandwich on whole wheat”). Aeglia uses natural language processing and USDA FoodData Central to estimate portion sizes and confirm details.

Voice-Logged Meal Tracking

Users snap a photo of their meal through the Aeglia companion app. Aeglia leverages Passio’s API to identify ingredients, estimate portions, and provide a nutritional breakdown.

Image-Based Food Recognition

Health Score Dashboard

The dashboard consolidates health data from wearables, nutrition logs, and mobile health data to generate a health score. It provides a high-level overview of daily progress and potential risks, helping users identify areas where preventive actions, like a breathing exercise or having a protein-heavy snack, could be most impactful. While the dashboard offers this formal summary, the primary interactions happen through wearables and smart speakers, with the phone used for meal logging.

Points & Rewards System

The rewards interface visualizes how healthy choices translate into insurance discounts or partner benefits. Connecting each workout or nutritious meal to a concrete perk keeps motivation high, ensuring users see the direct payoff of their efforts.

Technical Implementation

To ensure accurate meal tracking and real-time health insights, Aeglia integrates with the following technologies:

Passio API: Powers photo-based food recognition

Used by apps like MyFitnessPal, it allows Aeglia to identify foods from photos and calculate detailed nutritional information.

Google Fit/Apple HealthKit: Syncs health data from wearables

Syncs activity, sleep, and other health metrics, creating a holistic view of the user’s health.

Execution & Privacy

Where possible, AI computations happen locally to minimize cloud exposure. This significantly lowers data breach risks, helps reassure privacy-savvy users, and reduces server overhead.

Federated Processing

Users decide exactly which metrics they share (heart rate, steps, nutrition), building trust and giving full control to the user.

Granular Permissions

All personal data is encrypted and managed under HIPAA and local privacy laws.

Regulatory Compliance

Data-Backed Projections

COST SAVINGS

21%

Proactive monitoring can reduce high-cost claims by up to 21%, as issues are flagged earlier (Health Affairs)

PATIENT ENGAGEMENT

38%

Real-time rewards can boost daily active usage by 38% (The Journal of Medical Internet Research)

25-30%

PROVIDER EFFICIENCY

Automated data-sharing features can trim routine consult times by 25–30%, allowing more focus on critical cases (AHRQ)

Phased Rollout

We planned a measured deployment to validate engagement, refine AI prompts, and scale effectively:

When pitching to EY's Business Transformation Senior Management, we framed Aeglia as a strategic innovation aligned with their focus on digital transformation. We emphasized how it delivers measurable business impact through cost savings, enhanced efficiency, and benefits for all stakeholders. Afterward, we created a leave-behind deck to document our reasoning and address questions in writing.

My Learnings

BUILDING FOR EVOLVING TECH
Wearable devices and health guidelines shift over time, and we didn’t want our solution to become obsolete. By keeping data handling flexible, we ensured that the system could accommodate new metrics as they emerge, to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving field.

DESIGNING FOR DIFFERENT MOTIVATION STYLES
Some users thrive on short‑term boosts, while others need longer‑term targets to stay engaged. Recognizing this spectrum led us to blend immediate rewards with gradual premium discounts, making the experience feel more personal and rewarding for everyone.

CHALLENGING DEFAULT ASSUMPTIONS
We initially planned to build a standalone app, but pausing to ask ‘Why?’ opened the door to solutions that better fit users’ actual needs. By questioning basic assumptions, we avoided creating yet another isolated platform and instead integrated seamlessly into the tools people already use.

Special thanks to Adil Khadri, Luc Hosy and Ethan Jones for collaborating on early brainstorming. From there, I led user research, shaped the product strategy, and designed the core features.
